Gaming is entertainment. That is the premise under which the billion dollar empires have been created, but be sure that the Casino owners want to make sure you get as much "entertainment" as you can afford.
What constitutes entertainment varies from one person to the next. For some, just playing at a simple machine that offers the opportunity to win some money without any work is enough. For others, placing money at risk with the possibility of getting a big payoff is the draw. There are those that just want to "beat the house" and like the grind of playing for hours with small money at risk. And for a few, the adrenalin rush of having a large amount of money at risk is addictive.
Be sure of one thing: The beautiful casinos you see in Las Vegas and now throughout the world were not built by giving away money. What the casino offers is an opportunity for individual players to occasionally win, while making sure that over the long run, the casino is going to get a small percentage of all money that is bet.
Some of the traditional games in the casino, such as BlackJack, Craps, Baccarat and Roulette, are small percentage winners for the casino. For example, if a player knows basic strategy at BlackJack, and follows that strategy, without counting cards or any other system, he or she has what is effectively an even bet with the house. This means memorizing the correct hit/stand/double/split strategy for every combination of cards that is dealt. Keeping in mind that this requires a lot of discipline, and at some times a counterintuitive play.
Basic Rules
Each decision (BlackJack hand, roll of the dice, spin of the ball, or Baccarat deal) is an independent event. What the person next to you has done or the results of previous hands have no bearing on each decision of a game. Many people get caught up in looking for trends. In fact, the casino helps you do this, but it has no effect on the outcome of the next play. Most casinos today have a display board that shows the last 20 numbers that have hit in Roulette. They like nothing more than having you bet on 7 because it has not come up in the last 20 spins, because it is just as unlikely (1 out of 38) for it to come up the next time.
The focus of the casino is to provide you with entertainment. They do not want you to lose your money quickly. They want you to get the maximum amount of time for the money you spend. Not unlike a video arcade, you can consider each game you play an expense, except that in the casino, you have the opportunity of leaving with more money in your pocket. They like winners, because it brings you back for more play later, and eventually they will get their percentage of your money.
